Hull City Juniors 3-1 Darlington Juniors - 5/5/08

Hull City Juniors completed a league and cup double with a 3-1 win over Darlington at Winterton on Monday afternoon.

After securing the Puma Youth Alliance Cup with a 3-0 victory at Colchester United, only a defeat of double figure proportions would see Doncaster Rovers pip the Tigers to the league title.

City had to do without the services of central defender Liam Cooper, whose red card for deliberate handball at Layer Road has been rescinded, as he was away on international duty with the Scotland under 17 squad.

Also missing for the Tigers was the injured quartet of Nick McNamara, Liam Simpson, Nathan Hanley and Bill Law.

On a bright sunny afternoon City started well with Tom Cairney's ball sending Ryan Kendall clear. The striker rounded Darlington keeper Scott Pocklington but was forced wide and from his cross Anthony Hilton sent a diving header over the bar.

City took the lead in the 24th minute when Jamie Devitt raced away down the right and his low cross picked out Kendall who placed a right foot shot into the bottom corner.

However it was just two minutes before the visitors drew level. The City rearguard failed to deal with a ball into the box and the loose ball fell for Michael Smith to drill a shot low past Ben Hallam.

The Tigers regained the lead in the 34th minute when John Leonard's ball found Kendall and he held off the challenge of a defender before beating Pocklington at his near post.

After scoring four times in the 7-1 win at Lincoln Kendall went close to a hat trick in this game when he latched onto a quick clearance from Hallam but Pocklington blocked with his leg and then recovered in time to hold Devitt's follow up.

Darlington twice went close just before the break with Hallam holding Corey Barnes' strike from outside the box and then producing a good save to turn Daniel Groves' shot round the post.

Darlington again went close after the break but Hallam blocked from Smith and City replied with Devitt driving a free kick inches wide of the post.

Hilton then provided a chance for Aaron Raymond but his strike from the edge of the box was off target and Mark Cullen's shot was also wayward after fellow substitute Danny Emerton had won the ball.

Then, when a corner was only partly cleared, City's central defenders combined with Joe Lamplough's tricky run creating a chance for Steve Gardner whose shot was parried by Pocklington.

Cullen saw a left foot strike held by the Darlington keeper but the City striker did complete the scoring in the final minute. Cairney's skillful run took him through the Darlington defence and although Pocklington blocked his shot Cullen rammed in the rebound from a couple of yards.

Seconds later the final whistle sounded and the champagne corks were sent popping as the squad celebrated on the pitch.

Hull City: Ben Hallam, John Leonard, Nav Sidhu, Aaron Raymond (Danny Emerton 68 mins), Steve Gardner, Joe Lamplough, Freddie Rawson, Anthony Hilton, Jamie Devitt (Joe Fox 61 mins), Ryan Kendall (Mark Cullen 56 mins), Tom Cairney.

Subs not used: Lee Wright, Richard Overment.
