The Tigers moved into third place in the table following a deserved 2-0 win at Leicester City on Saturday.

Goals in each half from Dean Marney and Caleb Folan saw City claim all three points and made Marney's second half penalty miss irrelevant.

Despite snow showers earlier in the afternoon, the game kicked off in bright sunshine with the large band of travelling supporters packed into one corner of the ground.

City went close from a free kick in only the fourth minute, but Dean Windass - making his 700th career appearance - curled a shot just over the bar from 20 yards.

After a scrappy opening, City created the first real opportunity in the 14th minute when Windass found Fraizer Campbell with a clever ball.

Campbell managed to hold off Gareth McAuley but from a difficult angle, his shot could only find the outside of the net.

City gave Leicester an opportunity when Neil Clement fouled Steve Howard on the right edge of the box.

Jamie Clapham delivered a cross, but it was too high for Howard and Michael Turner was able to clear.

The Tigers went close from a free kick of their own on 29 minutes after Windass had been fouled. Clement took it and brought a diving save out of Paul Henderson.

Windass had the next chance for City three minutes later when a long throw found its way into his path, but his first time shot flew straight at Henderson.

Garcia was then booked as he conceded a free kick right on the edge of his own box. Lee Hendrie took it, but Ian Ashbee managed to head the ball away.

The Tigers took the lead in added time. Campbell's low, driven cross was only half cleared and when the ball fell to Dean Marney, he drilled a shot into the ground and into the net.

That wasn't the end of the first half action as Campbell won a free kick on the edge of the box.

Andy Dawson took it and saw his shot tipped round the post. There wasn't enough time to take the corner.

Half Time: Tigers 1-0 Leicester

Leicester made a change at half time with Kelvin Etuhu replacing Bruno N'Gotty.

City were soon forced into a change of their own on 53 minutes as Ian Ashbee, who had picked up a knock during the first half when attempting to shoot, was replaced by Simon Walton.

With a switch to a more attacking 4-4-2 formation, the home side were starting to look dangerous and Howard was unlucky to see his header from a corner drift just wide.

City were certainly looking a threat from set-pieces and when Clement fired a shot goalwards from a free kick, Henderson had to tip the ball away.

The Tigers won a penalty on 65 minutes when Campbell was upended by Henderson as he raced to get onto Marney's through ball.

The keeper was booked for the foul and a minor scuffle between Walton and Lee Hendrie delayed the taking of the spot kick.

Marney stepped up, but the keeper saved low to his right.

City's second change came in the 74th minute when Campbell became a victim of cramp. Caleb Folan came on in his place.

Folan made an immediate impact, scoring with his first involvement. Clement's hopeful ball over the top sent him scampering away and he produced a cool finish into the far bottom corner of the net.

The Tigers' made their final change with nine minutes to go as France replaced Garcia.

City looked comfortable during the closing stages as they claimed their second away win inside a week.

With Watford held to a 1-1 draw at Plymouth Argyle, the Tigers moved above the Hornets into third position prior to their visit to the KC Stadium next Saturday.

City are now in the top three at Championship level for the first time since November 1987 and only two points adrift of the automatic promotion slots.

That 2-1 win for Terry Neill's team 37 years ago also took City up to third position in the old Second Division.
